If you have read my previous post about baby number two, you know that we chose to keep the gender a surprise this time which meant designing a gender neutral nursery! We are both pretty set on this being our last baby and we don’t have a preference either way (not like you can choose anyways) so we figured we might as well go “old school” and not find out!
We never could have done this with our first because I was SO excited to decorate the nursery and wanted to make it as girly as can be. Now, it’s not that I wasn’t excited for this baby; quite the opposite actually. But, the circumstances were a little different. What was once our guest bedroom got turned into Kennadi’s room.
For this baby, we were debating on having them share a room but once we thought about it, it just logistically did not make sense with two different nap/sleep schedules. So, this meant turning our “den” / playroom into the nursery. This room is the center of our house, almost quite literally, and has double doors to our main living room. Due to this, we wanted to keep this nursery decorated in neutral colors regardless of the gender.
As you can see in the pictures below, we kept everything very simple and clean! I plan to add some personalization with little one’s name once they arrive but aside from that, everything will stay how we have it. Keep reading for all the details and items!
Gender Neutral Nursery: Accent Wall
This was the biggest project for the nursery. Like I mentioned, the double doors open to our living room so I knew I wanted a statement/accent wall on the back wall. I didn’t want wallpaper or anything too busy because I don’t know what this room could be used for in the future so I wanted it to be pretty calm and neutral.
My husband did a three quarter board and batten wall in Kennadi’s room (all the details here) and we decided to do more of a wainscoting wall for this nursery. This wall was definitely a lot of work but SO worth it. Everyone that has been over has immediately complimented the wall. I think it adds so much to the room and am really happy we went for it!
Gender Neutral Nursery: Furniture
It took me FOREVER, and I mean forever, to pick out the crib and dresser. This room is technically a den so there isn’t a closet. This baby will be sharing hanging closet space with Kennadi. Part of the reason it took so long to decide on furniture was because I didn’t like any dressers I was coming across. They were all too small and I knew we needed a lot of drawer space since we didn’t have a closet in the room.
The other reason was all the sets I was seeing looked clearly feminine or masculine to me. When keeping it gender neutral, I think everything tends to be more “boyish” but I didn’t want the nursery to scream “boy.”
I absolutely LOVE this set we found from Child Craft! I had never heard of the brand and was a little nervous to order furniture without seeing it in person first but it worked perfectly! The quality is amazing and the customer service was incredible.
One part of the dresser arrived chipped; nothing that couldn’t be painted and fixed but I had reached out to them and they immediately just sent us an entire new dresser! So, this is why there are two dressers side by side in the nursery. I wasn’t sure we would be able to fit two but we did and now we have a crazy amount of drawer space!
