Ever wonder how some people make travel and moving look like a breeze? These five tops can help you learn how to pack like a pro!
Nobody loves to travel with their stuff unorganized and spread across a ton of bags and suitcases. If you are planning to move homes, you don’t want an excessive number of moving boxes to unpack.
My friends have always commented on how I can fit so much stuff in such small bags and suitcases. Well, my family moved ten times while I was growing up so packing became a serious skill of mine!

1. Have a Plan
Always have a list and plan of attack! If you are going on a trip, make sure to outline everything you need to bring. If you are moving homes, you will want an organized list of everything you are packing to make sure you don’t lose anything during the move!
One way that helps me pack like a pro is to write my lists in categories to make sure I don’t forget anything.
For traveling, my categories include:
- Outfits
- PJs and Loungewear
- Undergarments
- Shoes
- Hats, Jewelry, Accessories
- Toiletries
Every time my family would move, we would pack one room at a time and make sure to label everything with the name of that room. Then we would have a list of how many boxes we had in each room. Once we arrived at our new home, we would be able to easily and quickly check that we had all of our boxes.

2. Use Packing Cubes
I cannot emphasize enough why you need packing cubes! These are the BEST! To pack like a pro, you must be able to really maximize the space you have. Packing cubes allow you to fit SO much into them and they keep your suitcase extremely organized.
When on vacation, I use the larger packing cubes to put all my dirty clothes in. It makes packing when leaving to head back home a much quicker process.
3. Roll Everything
And I mean everything! If it can be rolled, roll it! It is truly unbelievable how much space you save by rolling everything. Rolling clothing is more time consuming than folding clothing but the extra time is worth it.
I always roll each item of clothing and then place them into the packing cubes. For jackets, you can easily fold and then roll and tuck the material into the hood. This makes the larger items much smaller and easier to fit.
When packing a bedroom for a move, you will fit almost three times as much clothing into a moving box by rolling them and placing in layers than folding and stacking them.
Want to know the best part about rolling your clothes? It keeps them wrinkle free! There is nothing worse than arriving on vacation or unpacking your entire closet and looking at how wrinkled your clothes are. With rolling, you will notice a significant decrease in the wrinkles and creases.
4. Fill your Shoes and Accessories
You might not have ever looked at your shoes and viewed them as wasted space. Well, if you aren’t filling them, they are! Shoes make a perfect spot to tuck in smaller articles of clothing, undergarments, and toiletries. Not only does this maximize space but it also helps your shoes keep their shape and not get ruined while traveling or moving.
The same goes with any type of hat. Ever seen someone board an airplane and they are holding tons of hats? It is inconvenient and unnecessary! If you fill your hats with socks and/or rolled shirts, they will keep their shape. You can pad around the hats with packing cubes for extra protection.

5. Know your Limits
Everyone is aware of the dreaded 50 lb. weight limit for suitcases when flying. One way around this is by only taking a carry on sized suitcase. If you follow the tips above, this is definitely possible!
When you are moving, in order to determine your space limitations, decide whether you will be taking loads yourself or hiring a moving company. If you are considering hiring the professionals, I highly recommend Big Deahl’s Movers!Â
